"The Magnificent Seven" The Clash Cover by The Lions w/ Black Shakespeare
WHAT HAVE WE GOT? MAAAAAAAG-NIFICENCE!
It's very rare that musicians can approach a truly iconic song and cover it properly. It's like Icarus, flying too close to the sun only to get his wings destroyed. Just. Don't. Do. It. Leave it be and just bask in its wonder. To succeed at doing so means you have taken that magic and your understanding of it and then some.
I've been in awe at the way in which The Lions and Black Shakespeare have managed to take The Clash's Magnificent Seven/Dance and give it even more of that crossover weird/eclectic/roots/dance/gritty bad-old-days-NYC-of-my-youth in such an honest and genuine manner. It stinks of "Cocaine In My Brian" and "Love Money" and everything in between. Personally, I plan on playing it right between those and Risco Connection's "Ain't No Stoppin' Us" and so on and so forth...
Larry and David would have made this a Loft/Garage classic, had they had it back in the days, no question.
And Joe would be proud.
And both of those statements come very easily from someone from whom they would hardly come lightly from.

"Over and Over" Solomon Burke (Back To My Roots - 1976, CHESS)
Переглядів 9 тис.12 років тому
"Can't you tell by the way I'm smiling..." Here's yet another case of something I simply cannot believe is not on UA-cam... I first discovered Solomon Burke's "Over and Over" on his 1976 Chess BACK TO MY ROOTS lp on one of my many North-South drives along California's PCH (with record shops all along the way being the main focus) - this one being in the early 90s. Needless to say, this sublime,...

Lula Collins "Help Me"
Переглядів 12 тис.12 років тому
Ok, so I never expected to get such a response to my original posting of Miss Lula Collins' "Hold Out (Keep The Faith)". It's been so amazing to see the outpouring of love that folks have for her and her work, to have her family members re-hear her voice again after years, etc. I don't know, all I can say is how much her song "Hold Out" moved me. I never expected what came after. So, in that sp...
Mabu's Madness "In Your Day" (Maple, 1971)

1971, Maple Records. One that continues to get lost in the cracks, even amongst the best diggers... Poignant and to the heart with a-z moves... I'm going to go ahead and quote my man Soulman/Phill Most Chill when he was chastizing the yout on SoulStrut: "how folks gonna know Boscoe and East of Underground and Colonel Abrams and not know MABU'S MADNESS on Maple??? i'm VERY disappointed in the so...
King James Edition "Won't Have To Worry" (Peacock Records, 1974)

Absolutely top of the pile rare sunshine gospel funk soul. Imagine the best, early moments of The Sylvers, sanctified. This is enough to make me a believer. Peacock, 1974. Costs a pretty penny but salvation don't come cheap... My now-gone brother / vinyl partner in crime would have loved this record so I always think of him when I give it a spin...

Oh my goodness. This song brings back many good memories of my childhood. So cool.
Anyone have the full lyrics to this version?
Super mix des Clash..
❤
Tip is a straight genius for finding this sample. This cut is sick.......
You learn something new everyday. I started partying and mixing beats when the girl version was out. You guys are the originators huh? Love this song. Used to party my butt off block parties and basement joints in Brooklyn!
Wow!! So great to hear this version. I'm a huge fan of this song- for as long as I can remember. A frequent clubber in NYC 80's--2000's. "Is it all over my face"!!!
This version is so much more energetic than the studio one. Wish they had played this live.
they did, once
